If you're ranking on the second page or further down the page, then you're essentially invisible.
In this guide, you'll learn how to solve first page ranking problems in 7 easy steps, as well as understand why ranking on the first page doesn't have to be your ultimate goal either.
The following are not required, but to maximize the chances of getting ranked on the first page, your site should:
- Mobile friendly.;
- Load speed block.;
- Simplicity of use (e.g. clean navigation, nice user experience, etc.) ;);
- encryption (e.g. using HTTPS instead of HTTP).;
- (a) Well-structured; and;
- It can solve technical SEO type problems (e.g. dead links, error pages).
If your website doesn't meet the above criteria, these factors will not only directly affect your ranking in Google, but will also lead to increased SEO difficulty.

1、Choose a keyword
Most of you have probably already done this step. But if you haven't done it yet, you need to choose a keyword that needs to be on the first page.
2、Check out the competitors
Please search for your keywords and see the first page of results.
If they're all from big, well-known brands and you're a startup that no one has heard of, getting to the front page is going to be tough - at least in the short term.
For example, you can view search results for this term “dresses (dresses)“:

Each result is from a well-known brand - Macy's, Nordstrom, Missguided, Boohoo and more.

This clearly shows that those looking to buy new clothes want to buy from a well known and established brand. The bar will be high for a new brand website to participate in ranking for this keyword, even for the smartest SEO people.
If you don't know who the big names in your industry are, you can paste the keyword into Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer, drag it to the SERP overview section at the end, and check the Domain Rating of the ranking site.
Shown here are the ratings of the top ranked domains, with score values from 0-100.
Crucially, not all big brands have high ratings, but the vast majority do. For example, you can see here that Missguided's domain rating is only 70, but that's still very high.

In general, the lower that number is for your site, the more difficult it will be to rank compared to the current rating of the first page ranking page.
I only see the big brand sites on the front page.
Ranking on the first page will be difficult, but not impossible.
If ranking for this keyword is vital to your business, then you should still rank for it. Be aware that you may not be able to participate in the rankings very quickly, while it may be necessary to build more outbound links than your competitors.
If your goal is to rank in the short to medium term, go back to Step #1 and choose a simpler keyword, such as “plus size maxi dresses”, while its first page competitors are small to medium sized brands.

3. Select or create a page dedicated to SEO (to meet search needs)
The page you want to rank on Google could be your home page, but it doesn't have to be your home page. It can be any page. Just make sure it meets the search intent (Googlewish(Ranking your content pages that fulfill search needs).
How to check? Compare the page to what is already ranked on the home page.
If your page meets the “3C criteria” for search intent, it will be easier to rank:
- Content-type.;
- Content format;
- Content angle (content perspective)
Content-type
The most common “type” of content in search results is usually one of the following:
- Blog page;
- Product pages (detail pages about individual products).;
- Categorized pages (multiple pages for products with the same attributes).;
- Featured page (a page on which a product or service is placed).
By looking at page titles and URLs, you can get an idea of the type of content they are.
Content format
The following is the dominant “content format” on the top-ranked pages. It is mainly used for some specific content presentation modes. Common ones include:
- “How-to” guides (how-to type tutorials)
- Step-by-step tutorials
- List posts
- Opinion pieces
- Reviews
- Comparisons
Content angle
The most common “content angle” of the top ranking pages below. It's harder to quantify than type and format, but essentially, it's the main indicator of first page ranking.
4. Make sure your content covers all topic directions
It's not enough to have content that matches the search intent. Google aims to show the most relevant, useful results on the first page.
How do you make sure your content is up to snuff?
You can do this by covering everything a searcher wants and expects to see.
For example, let's say you want to participate in the ranking of “best watch brands”.
We can understand by analyzing the search intent that you need to write a listings type of blog page and target mainly some luxury brands.

Chances are you already have a page like this and need to rewrite it? Does it now cover all the watch brands and categories that searchers want to know about?
The easiest way to do this is to compare your content to the top ranked ones.
For example, if you look at the pages that rank high for “best watch brands,” you'll see that they all mention Rolex.
If you didn't mention it then you should add it to your content's.
Above, this is an obvious example. But some of the other brands mentioned on the top page of the top ranked page include:
- Tag Heuer.;
- Chopard (Switzerland).;
- Omega.;
- Cartier.
By mentioning them, you're not only giving searchers what they want and expect to see, but you're also potentially increasing the relevance of the content in Google's eyes.
It's not just about “adding keywords”, it's about adding depth and utility to your content. Don't force these keywords and phrases into your content just to appear.
If you want to go a little deeper, you can analyze the page with the help of Content Gap (Content Gap Opportunity).
All you need to do is paste some of the page URLs that rank well into the Ahrefs Content Gap (Content Gap Opportunity) tool.

Tip.
Make sure you select “URL Mode” in the drop down box and leave the bottom blank.
By clicking on “Show keywords“ you can see the keywords that these pages are involved in ranking for.

Again, don't think of this as a simple list of keywords, you need to delve into what people want to see when they type this keyword into Google.
In this example we can learn:
- swiss watch brands.;
- luxury swiss watches.;
- mechanical watch brands.;
- french watch brands (法国手表品牌).
Therefore, you need to make sure that these are covered within and you can even use some of them as subheadings for your content.

5、Estimate the amount of external links you need to add external links
Outbound links are a very important ranking metric.

Therefore, the higher the quality of the outbound links you have, the higher your chances of ranking on the first page of Google.
Remember two things:
- It's not just the quantity that matters.Because the number of links is only part of the equation, quality matters too. (If you want to delve deeper into this, check out the current top-ranking pages for “Referring domains” report to see how many of the sites linking to them are of high quality).
- Whether these numbers are achievable depends on your ability to build linksand the amount of time and effort you're willing to put into ranking that page.
I can't get enough outbound links
If you feel that it is more difficult to produce high quality outbound links, go back to step #1 and choose a simpler keyword. This is the best way to get rankings in the short term. Wait until you have more experience with link building, then go back to optimizing for slightly more difficult keywords to rank for.
6, add internal links
Another way to increase page weight: add relevant internal links.
The easiest way to do this is to google it site:yourwebsite.com "[target keyword]"
This will find all the pages on your site that mention that exact word or phrase.
7, maintain patience, continuous optimization

For the first place, the average ranking time is 3 years.
However, that doesn't mean it will take you 2-3 years to rank. Some pages rank much faster than that. If you create the right content and have resources invested in SEO, then getting to the first page can be much faster than average.
Ranking on the first page of Google is not an exact science. No one knows exactly how the Google algorithm works, so there is no formula for guaranteed rankings.
